Les Cousins Weekender
August 24 - August 26
Returning for its second edition of 2024, the Broadside Hacks Folk Club present their latest tribute to legendary Soho Folk and Blues Club Les Cousins this coming August Bank Holiday (24th-26th August) at St Giles in the Fields Church, London.
Opening in 1964 at 49 Greek Street in a restaurant basement, Les Cousins rapidly became central to the British Folk Revival in the mid 60s, with so many cornerstones of the movement drifting through its smoke-filled rooms for its infamous weekend all-nighters. The list of musicians who graced its stage or frequented the venue was considerable: Al Stewart, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell Cat Stevens, Donovan, Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, The Incredible String Band, Jackson C Frank, John Renbourn, Sandy Denny, John Martyn, Alexis Korner, Paul Simon and many more…
Across two days of music and talks, Broadside Hacks Folk Club aims to revive the legacy and memory of this most significant cultural space. Featuring veterans – Bridget St. John and Rose Simpson (of The Incredible String Band) – as well as frontrunners of the latest wave of British folk – Daisy Rickman, Goblin Band and Sam Grassie (plus a special) appearance from Diana Matheou, whose husband Andy founded the venue – the event stays true to the Broadside Hacks ethos: Through its record label and live events, bringing together folk enthusiasts, and ushering in a whole new generation of fans.
Running alongside the events at St. Giles in the Fields will be a week-long exhibition at the Flitcroft Street Gallery (23rd August – 1st September), featuring archival objects, photographs, and more Les Cousins Memorabilia.
