Fans of Angeline Morrison‘s work will be waking up to a fresh vinyl delivery this morning, as The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience arrives on 33rpm.
We received ours from Topic Records earlier this week, and it’s a sumptuous thing indeed, the lyrics and song stories packed onto a beautifully-designed inner sleeve, accompanied by two collectors’ postcards (which you’re unlikely to want to send to anyone else – keep them for yourself).
The album, produced by Eliza Carthy and including performances from the producer herself, Martin Carthy, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, Hamilton Gross, Clarke Camilleri, Rosie Crow, Mary Woodvine and Alex Neilson, came out in October 2022, and won acclaim across the board. It ranked very highly in our own Album of the Year list, and received a glowing review, stating, “Angeline Morrison will go on to record other wonderful albums, but The Sorrow Songs is likely to be viewed as her masterpiece. And rightly so. It’s tempting to call this an album for our times, but – unfortunately, given the subject matter – it will remain an album for as long as it takes for equality to prevail. In the meantime, allow these songs to shock and sadden you, and to be lifted by a truly profound ending.”
The album can be purchased on vinyl from a number of decent record shops, or ordered online.
