Tradfolk is thrilled to be back for the third year running as FolkEast’s official media partner, and we couldn’t be more excited to announce the return of the Tradfolk Takeover for the second year in a row. Taking place this Sunday on the Stage on the Far Side of the Woods, from 1:45 pm until 10:30 pm, the Tradfolk Takeover promises an unforgettable journey through the vibrant world of traditional music. The stage has been meticulously curated and will be MC-ed by Jon Wilks, Tradfolk founder and editor, who will also be interviewing the legendary Martin Carthy on the Moot Hall Stage this Friday at 1:15 pm.
The Tradfolk Takeover is all about showcasing the finest up-and-coming musicians who have drawn deeply from the wells of tradition, alongside a few bonafide legends of the folk world. Each artist brings something unique to the stage, ensuring an afternoon and evening filled with enchanting performances that both honor and redefine the folk tradition.
1:45 pm: Holly Clarke
Kicking off the afternoon is Holly Clarke, a singer who channels the raw, unfiltered essence of traditional folk music. Born and raised in the Lake District, Holly’s music is deeply intertwined with the stories and landscapes of Northern England. Her haunting vocals and understated guitar work weave together to create a sound that is both ancient and refreshingly contemporary. Whether she’s singing traditional ballads or her original compositions, Holly has a rare ability to make the past feel vividly present, offering her audience a deeply emotional and immersive experience.
3:30 pm: Owen Spafford & Louis Campbell
Following Holly, Owen Spafford & Louis Campbell take the stage with a dynamic duo performance that promises to be a masterclass in musical chemistry. Owen and Louis have been making waves in the folk scene with their inventive approach to traditional music, blending intricate fiddle and guitar work with a fearless sense of experimentation. Both of these young musicians are steeped in the folk tradition, yet they bring a modern sensibility to their performances, creating soundscapes that are as surprising as they are beautiful. Their ability to push the boundaries of what folk music can be while staying true to its roots makes them one of the most exciting acts to watch in the current scene.
5:00 pm: Maddie Morris
As the afternoon progresses, Maddie Morris steps up to deliver a performance that promises to be as powerful as it is poignant. Maddie is a rising star in the folk world, known for her compelling songwriting that tackles themes of social justice, identity, and empowerment. With a voice that is both soulful and piercing, Maddie has the rare ability to captivate an audience with just a few notes. This is bold and unapologetic music; a commentary on the world we live in, delivered with the grace and wisdom of someone far beyond their years.
6:30 pm: Malin Lewis Duo
The Malin Lewis Duo takes the stage next, bringing a whirlwind of energy and innovation that is sure to electrify the audience. Led by Malin Lewis, a piper and multi-instrumentalist with a deep respect for tradition and an insatiable curiosity for new sounds, the duo’s music is a vibrant fusion of old and new. Their performances are characterized by a sense of adventure, with Malin’s custom-built instruments and unique compositions taking center stage. Expect a set that defies easy categorization, blending traditional melodies with contemporary influences to create something entirely fresh and captivating.
8:00 pm: Eliza Carthy
Last year’s Tradfolk Takeover performance by Angeline Morrison saw the audience spilling out of the tent and across the woods. We fully expect the hilltop glade to be completely overrun for this rare and very intimate solo performance that is simply not to be missed. Eliza Carthy is nothing short of folk royalty, having spent her life immersed in the tradition while continuously pushing its boundaries. Her solo performances are a real treat, offering an intimate glimpse into her vast repertoire of songs and stories. Whether she’s playing the fiddle, singing, or simply sharing tales from her extraordinary career, Eliza’s presence on stage is magnetic. Her performance promises to be a highlight of the weekend, blending the old and the new in a way that only she can.
9:30 pm: Goblin Band
Closing out the Tradfolk Takeover in style is Goblin Band, a group that has been turning heads with their uproarious approach to folk music, with none other than Martin Carthy naming them his favourite band of the moment. Drawing inspiration from the darker, more mysterious side of the tradition, Goblin Band’s music is as eerie as it is enchanting. Their performances are a theatrical experience, blending traditional tunes with original compositions to create a sound that is entirely their own. With a lineup of skilled musicians and a flair for the dramatic, Goblin Band is the perfect act to bring this year’s takeover to a close.
This Sunday, join us on the Stage on the Far Side of the Woods for a day of music that honors the past while looking boldly to the future. The Tradfolk Takeover is more than just a series of performances—it’s a celebration of the enduring power and endless possibilities of traditional music. We can’t wait to see you there.
