Umpteen reasons to love FolkEast

We've been wondering aloud, largely on social media, how many reasons there are to love Suffolk's finest folk festival. Here's how you replied. Let us count the ways.

Tradfolk is delighted to be heading to FolkEast this year as official media partners. This article is part of a series of articles that we'll be producing in the run-up to, and during, the 2022 events.

FolkEast is 10 this year – of all the reasons to book a ticket, a 10th birthday party seems a pretty sturdy one. However, rather than us blathering on about why you ought to go, we opened up the question to some of our folk musician friends, as well as our fine readers and social media followers. Here’s what they had to say for themselves.

What makes FolkEast so special?

“I first played at Folk East in 2019 and thought the whole festival had a great atmosphere, with such a wide variety of dance, crafts and workshops as well as music. It was an honour to be invited back to play at their socially distanced live-streamed event in 2020, our first festival in the new climate and a memory to really treasure. I’ll never forget seeing people dancing in the rain to live music for the first time since the pandemic. John and Becky have been so supportive of my music over the past three years and it’s always a pleasure to play for them, whether it’s in the field at Folk East or the village hall in Blaxhall. I can’t wait to be back at the festival this Summer for more music, local beer and good times. Happy birthday Folk East – thank you for everything!” – Katherine Priddy

“Happy birthday, FolkEast! From the very early days to the crazy new site and its insanely fun launch day, to every moment I’ve been lucky enough to stand on your stages…thanks for everything, friends. Love, respect, Waywardness and Imaginary Villages to you! It takes a village! ❤️❤️❤️” – Eliza Carthy

“‘Happy Anniversary to Folkeast Festival,’ I shout at the top of my voice. John and Beckey have created a unique experience for all who attend the festival, whether performers, caterers, volunteers, families and friends. On arrival at the festival, it’s like entering a safe haven, and the smiling begins. I’m smiling as I write this. Roll on August…” – Peter Knight

“Happy 10th Birthday to Folk East… one of the finest and most individual festivals out there. This year will be my fourth visit and I can’t wait to be back. Always one of the best and most interesting line-ups of the year and such a unique place to hang out. Brilliant food, wonderful beer, gorgeous site, and this year has some amazing artists – it’s going to be a phenomenal weekend!” – Sam Sweeney

“I was delighted to have performed at Folk East at its birth and to have been back in subsequent years, and it has become one of my favourite festivals. Superb programming and organisation, perfect location, lovely atmosphere. Happy Anniversary and see you this summer!” – Paul Sartin
